This week we welcome, Andrew Mack and Billisemo

Located at the Starbucks on the corner of Princess & Sydenham Streets, 251 Princess, Kingston

Just a reminder – There will be no Thursday night performance this week (Oct 30th) but on Fri, Oct 31st, in a Special Friday Night Performance, we’re very happy to welcome back Billisemo

WED – Andrew Mack is a Kingston area singer/songwriter and the energetic front man for the popular Kingston-based rock blues band A Few Innocent Civilians. Andrew is an accomplished guitar player who draws his musical influences from Freddie King, Luke Doucet, The Sheep Dogs, Jeff Healey, and the Black Keys, among others. His solo show is a tale of love, loss, and land as told by voice, harmonica and his resonating ever present guitar.
Singer/songwriter Rick Gravel will be joining Andrew for a little coffee time fun. As the drummer and percussionist for A Few Innocent Civilians, Rick is sure to bring the rhythm to the house! Whether he’s strumming his small acoustic guitar or letting loose on his drums, it is always a fun night!”

In a special Halloween Friday night performance we are delighted to present Billisemo!

Friday- Billisemo is a piano and violin duo. Bill Bosworth has been a jazz drummer all his life and now applies his rhythmic techniques to the piano. Lise de Kok has mostly played classical music. For the last few years they have been performing jazz standards, Latin pop and even some country tunes. Billisemo focuses on the music of the great Broadway composers such as Cole Porter, George Gershwin and Duke Ellington

Contemporary Songstress, Cat Thomson finds the pieces that fit

Cat Thomson, West coast recording artist signed to 604 Records made everything fit just right with her debut EP release Puzzle on Wednesday October 22, 2014. A six song collection that tackles various subjects including, bullying and overcoming heart break. But there are also tracks detailing lessons learned from life experiences and memories lived giving Puzzle an almost autobiographical reflection.

I received an advance copy of her album via a download card at Canadian Music Week 2014 in May. Her live set is spectacular as Cat holds the audience from the start of the first note right down to the ending phrase of the last song. Her album didn’t change significantly from pre-released copy to the final product, a song or two switched out, but overall the same tone and amazing quality. Shout out to producer Kevin “Kevvy” Mental lead vocalist from Fake Shark Real Zombie for the phenomenal job.

Starting off with the title track, Puzzle presents a vintage almost off the record player sound with building theatrics was a unique way to capture the listeners’ attention quickly. The orchestral arrangements add body and showcase her voice brilliantly.

Goodbye accurately describes the emotions of a breakup in a sultry ballad evoking emotion as her vocals cascade over a rather simple melody.

Many years of professional training is put to work with fantastic results through complex vocal arrangements and moving piano melodies. The entire EP has a hauntingly beautiful tone that fits her mature sound. The album seems to be in tune with her artistic vision and (in my opinion) will find a home in many music lovers’ hearts. Because of her versatility, playing with styles comes easy to Cat. It is for this reason I can’t wait to hear more of what Cat has cooking up in that musical brain of hers.

On Wed, Oct 22nd , we’re very happy to welcome Chris Ronald, nominated for the 2014 Canadian Folk Music Award, in his cross-country tour.

abbreviated from his website www.chrisronald.com: “Chris Ronald’s “keenly luxuriant voice and immaculate songcraft” (Ken Eisner, The Georgia Straight) have gained him a passionately loyal following around the world. Timeline, Chris’ third album released March 2014, has been turning heads with successes in the coveted Kerrville New Folk and International Songwriting competitions, and he’s now been nominated to become “Songwriter of the Year” at the Canadian Folk Music Awards. Whether it be solo or as a duo with John Ellis, Chris is scheduled to tour internationally as well as across Canada as a VIA Rail ‘Artist on Board.’
Chris emigrated from England to Canada in 2002, and his music has been likened to “the country and folk that came out of both Laurel Canyon and, more so, the British Isles in the mid-seventies.” (Stuart Derdeyn, The Province). In live performance, Chris draws on his abilities as a highly skilled singer, storyteller and musician (guitar, harmonica, ukulele) to deliver a show that is both captivating and unique. Chris remains actively involved in the local music scene in and around his hometown of Vancouver where he plays a variety of venues, organizes and hosts community music events, and delivers school programs in songwriting and creativity.”

Irwin’s Version: Irwin plays flat-pick and finger-style folk and blues and some reggae on a well-loved 1976 Norman acoustic, story songs mostly: John Prine, Pete Seeger, Paul Simon, Jesse Winchester, Patty Griffin, and Bruces Springsteen and Cockburn, along with some Canadiana folk and the occasional version of a familiar pop tune.

Cardboard Crowns set to release Global Citizen Tonight

Cardboard Crowns are Quebec natives, relocated to the nation’s capital, who are making a name for themselves. Recently we saw Rat Kuehn, Googs Megannety, Mystery Skunk Cuningham, and Tokyo Speirs (we are thinking stage names and are looking forward to finding out!) tear up the stage in an energy packed set at Ottawa Folk Festival in September. They had the crowd on their feet with an up beat blend of ska-punk rock infused with positive and thought provoking  lyrics.

It seemed as though the smaller stage couldn’t contain their energy. The drummer, who wore a bright orange tights bounced around the stage without missing a beat.

Winners of 2013 Live 88.5 Big Money Shot, there was no question in our minds why Cardboard Crowns came out in the forefront. Influenced by Mischief Brew, Black Flag, and Blackbird Raum, there is no question why many have labeled them as, “a band to watch.” We can see why as they mix their love of music with raw talent and stage antics bring just the right mix of hilarity to their unique set complete with cardboard crowns most often fashioned from opportune cartons of empty beer.

Ottawa fans don’t miss out on Cardboard Crowns is releasing their CD, Global Citizen tonight at Mavericks. Show starts 9pm!

Stay tuned for an interview and a review of their new CD Global Citizen!

THURS – Scott Knapp was involved in Samba Kingston (sambakingston.ca ) and was a member of the performance group ‘Wuawuanco Todos‘. He was also involved with Samba Ottawa when he lived there. Originally from Kingston, he returned here after having spent time living in Vancouver, Ottawa and the Durham region. When he first lived in Kingston, he loved the music scene here and does so now again on his return, but in a much deeper way that has given him a new resurgence to play.
